Description

A contemporary abstract work on stretched linen canvas.

“A Mind Trying to Hold the World” is an exploration of tension and the chaos of being human. Created using only a graphite pencil on raw linen, this minimal yet intricate composition embodies restraint in material while allowing the focus to be on the movement of lines. The natural tone of the exposed linen remains visible, becoming an essential part of the piece - grounding the work in warmth and organic texture. Restless pencil lines collide, overlap, and build into a complex web of energy. What appears as “a mess” gradually reveals intention - like thoughts accumulating faster than they can be contained. The work sits within the tradition of gesture art, where abrupt, instinctive movements become both the method and the message.

This artwork was born through performance. Rather than standing before the canvas, I lay upon it. I did not look - I conducted it. Through movement, breath, and embodied rhythm, the lines were created as a physical dialogue between body and surface. The result is both controlled and uncontrolled - a record of presence, motion, and surrender.

Restless pencil lines collide, overlap, and build into a complex web of energy. What appears as “a mess” gradually reveals intention — like thoughts accumulating faster than they can be contained.

Painting invites the viewer closer — to trace the lines, to pause within the stillness between them, and perhaps to recognise their own inner state of mind.

This piece makes a striking statement and holds a powerful presence in any room.
