Description
The Worship of Venus is a contemporary response to Titian’s Renaissance painting of the same name, reimagined through a feminist lens. While referencing the historical ideals of beauty, love, and fertility, this work reclaims Venus as a symbol of feminine power, humanity, and emotional depth.
Through pencil, charcoal and pastel paint, I explore the materiality of drawing and the expressive potential of mark-making. Gestural, emotive marks coexist with moments of restraint and open space, allowing the surface to breathe. The drawing builds through accumulation and erasure, embraces movement, softness, and restraint as much as boldness.
Women hold strength and gentleness simultaneously. They are mysterious yet obvious, decisive yet fleeting - capable of asserting themselves with bold, confident marks or dissolving into barely visible smudges. Like this work, femininity is not singular or fixed, but layered, evolving, and deeply connected to life.
