Lady on Bed

Figurative art has always been at the heart of my practice, inspiring everything I create. I am deeply fascinated by the human form and often depict it through an abstract lens. My influences come from the body itself, the physicality of paint, and the expressive power of gesture. I often portray deformed silhouettes of women, androgenic, anonymous bodies deprived of details or multidimensional. I often paint women who are deep in thought, romantic, relaxed, or simply sitting or lying.

I created a portrait of a woman, but the shape of the body is partly realistic and partly androgenic. I made a multidimensional painting expressed in its topic and in its use of paint. I wanted to create a strong contrast within a painting, but at the same time wanted to keep the painting very cohesive. The top part of the background is transparent with layered paint that adds depth to the painting, and the construction of the body is created similarly. The 'bed' part is painted in solid flat grey colour. The empty space of grey colour is set with a rich pencil drawing of the girl, which adds another level of contrast and prominence to the painting. Pencil sketch adds softness and contemporary style. The pencil has been preserved by fixative, so don't worry about smudges! Canvas is of excellent quality and sturdy. 

Painting is being framed in a white oak floating frame. I am happy to send the artwork without a frame if that's your preference.

New figuration refers to artistic tendencies in art that rejected the aesthetics of impersonal abstract art and updated various forms of return to the figure. While they assumed a human phenomenon, the human did not have to be physically present - a trace or sign is sufficient. It represents an internally urgent expression of moods and existential feelings.
